Writing your birth story

A Guide to reflecting on your experience

Writing your birth story is a powerful way to reflect on and honor your experience. Whether your birth was exactly as planned or full of unexpected turns, every detail matters because your story matters. Use these prompts to guide your writing and help you capture the emotions, sensations, and moments of your journey.

Before Labor Began

  • How did you feel in the days leading up to birth?

  • Did you have any signs that labor was approaching?

  • What emotions were presentโ€”excitement, nervousness, anticipation?

  • Did you do anything special to prepare (rituals, affirmations, nesting, resting)?

Early Labor

  • Where were you when contractions started? What were you doing?

  • How did you recognize that labor had begun?

  • Who was with you, and how did they react?

  • What did contractions feel like in the beginning?

  • How did you cope with early laborโ€”movement, breathwork, distractions?

Active Labor & Transition

  • When did you realize it was time to go to your birth location (or call your birth team if at home)?

  • What comfort measures or support made a difference?

  • How did your body feel as labor intensified?

  • Were there any challenges or unexpected turns?

  • Did you experience any defining momentsโ€”deep emotions, mindset shifts, or powerful realizations?

Pushing & Birth

  • What thoughts and emotions did you have in the final moments before birth?

  • How did you feel as you pushed (or as your baby was born via cesarean)?

  • What sensations or memories stand out from the moment of birth?

  • What was the first thing you saw, heard, or felt when your baby arrived?

  • How did your birth team and loved ones react?

Meeting Your Baby

  • What was your first impression of your baby?

  • What was your babyโ€™s first movement, sound, or expression?

  • How did your partner or support team respond to seeing the baby?

  • What emotions washed over you as you held your baby for the first time?

The First Hours & Days

  • What was the golden hour like?

  • How did the first breastfeeding (or bottle-feeding) experience go?

  • What were the first words spoken to your baby?

  • How did your body feel immediately after birth?

  • What memories or moments from the first few days stand out?

Reflecting on Your Birth Story

  • How do you feel about your birth experience now?

  • Did anything surprise you about labor or birth?

  • If you could tell your pregnant self one thing, what would it be?

  • What are you most proud of from your birth experience?

  • What wisdom or encouragement would you offer to someone preparing for birth?

Your birth story is uniquely yoursโ€”thereโ€™s no right or wrong way to tell it. Write from your heart, include as much detail as feels right for you, and honor every part of your journey.
